| Abstract: | Recommends the use of suitably modified yoga exercises in the psychomotor training of children and mentions some of the benefits reported from an experimental program now in progress. Yoga is not a strenuous activity; its emphasis is on slow controlled movement. It encourages participation by children who are self-conscious about their lack of coordination. Deliberate movements and controlled breathing have a markedly calming effect, reducing tension and promoting relaxation in children who are overstimulated by physical activity. It is not necessary for teachers to be yogis to lead these exercises, and no special equipment is required. Teachers have reported that they themselves are calmer and less tense after such sessions. It is emphasized that exercises for adults must be modified for the use of children. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2012 APA, all rights reserved) |
