Abstract: In this study, we have attempted to address this issue by examining whether a diverse array of physiological, psychological, health and lifestyle measures are associated with exercise adherence in older retirement village residents. 344 people aged 62 years and over participated in the study in Sydney, Australia. Participation involved attending group exercise or yoga classes twice a week for 6–12 months. Exercise classes were conducted free of charge within the retirement villages. 163 low adherers (those who attended less than 30% of exercise classes, including 32 people who attended no classes) were compared with the remaining 181 people in the sample. The result shows that the low adherers had impaired balance and cognition, slower walking speed, were older and more likely to have health and mobility problems than the high adherers. The study findings identified poor balance, multiple medication use and impaired cognition as significant and independent factors for predicting poor adherence to exercise programs in older retirement village residents.
