| Abstract: | Explains the physiological aspects of transcendental meditation (TM). The literature concerning neurophysiological aspects of states of consciousness is summarized: brain wave patterns during sleep and wakefulness, measurements done on practitioners of Yoga, decreases in metabolic rate that take place concurrently with TM, and studies of reaction time, auditory perception, and perceptual motor performance. The physiological and psychosomatic changes which occur lead to reduced tension and to increased harmony, contentment, and tolerance toward frustration. These changes suggest that during the hypometabolic state of TM there is a reduced activity of the adrenergic component of the autonomic nervous system. Studies on the use of TM in aberrant behaviors such as alcoholism and other drug addiction are reviewed.
