Abstract: Comments on an article by P. Grossman et al. (see record 2010-20641-007). The study by Grossman et al. was a randomized, single-blind, controlled trial that investigated the effects of mindfulness-based meditation compared to usual care on depression and quality of life measures in 150 patients with multiple sclerosis (MS). Previously published controlled studies evaluating yoga and meditation for patients with MS have shown improvement in self-reported scores of pain, fatigue, mental functioning, and some quality of life measures. However, this is the largest randomized controlled trial evaluating mind-body therapy in the setting of MS. The results of this solidly designed study underscore the importance of treatment directed at quality of life issues in patients with MS, and provide level III evidence that mindfulness-based meditation is a helpful therapeutic option.
