Abstract: According to the 2007 National Health Statistics Reports, approximately 38% of adults and 12% of children in the US had used complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) therapy within the last 12 months. This review aims to provide a brief overview of several popular CAM therapies involving various chronic pain states with an emphasis on neuropathic pain. We selected the most representative and highest quality of evidence for each therapy and provided a succinct summary and grades of recommendation based on the criteria by University of Oxford Centre for Evidence-Based Medicine. This brief overview of the selected CAM therapies highlights the diversity of practices offered in treating chronic pain. Despite their popularity, only few CAM therapies have shown high quality of scientific evidence, Level A recommendation, for their use. Although many other modalities of CAM therapies like various vitamins, biofeedback, hypnosis, and yoga were not discussed, the authors hope that this succinct overview has illustrated some of the promising and sometimes inadequate evidence behind such therapies.
