Abstract: This study investigated whether the effects of mindful exercise such as hatha yoga or tai chi, prior to standardized testing, improved the standardized test scores of fourth- and fifth-grade students who participated in the mindful exercise. These students were compared to similar students who participated in a regular athletic gym class prior to the same testing. The immediate effects of aerobic athletic exercise have been assessed using various types of exercise, such as running, step aerobics, swimming, and water exercise. These previous studies generally indicated an improvement in test score as a result of the aerobic activity; however, a meta-analysis did not reveal significant differences among the various types of aerobic exercise, and no consistent pattern of dose-response exercise effects was revealed. In this study, the effects on test scores of a low-intensity activity emphasizing proprioceptive awareness was compared with the effects of more commonly examined exercise modes. Given the increasing popularity of mindful activities such as yoga and tai chi, the current study filled a gap in the literature about activities of the body and mind. This research investigated whether a fitness activity effected change in students' cognitive process by enabling them to apply the skills they learned as a means of executing the fitness skill set. The poses of tai chi and yoga involve movements that require thought as well as concentration. This research examined the process that helps children to move and sought to determine its effects on standardized test taking, which requires an immense amount of concentration as well as the ability to focus.
