Abstract: (from the chapter) Relaxation comes in many forms. Yoga, meditation, diaphragmatic breathing, hypnosis, guided imagery, Tai Chi, and Lamaze are common examples. Due to its widespread use, some go so far as to call relaxation the "aspirin" of behavioral medicine. This chapter opens with a discussion of several key developments in relaxation training. Of these, a specific type of training method called behavioral relaxation training (BRT) and assessment is discussed at length. Who might benefit from this form of training, contraindications of its use, and purported mechanisms underlying the technique are dealt with first. The remainder of the chapter provides step-by-step guidelines in teaching BRT to clients. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2012 APA, all rights reserved) (chapter)
