Abstract: Assessed the effect of yoga on the ability to reduce the pulse rate voluntarily, based on external cues, in Ss who were novices to yoga practice. 17 Ss (aged 22-44 yrs) in a yoga group were volunteers for a 1-mo residential yoga-training program and 17 Ss in a non-yoga control group were participants. Two measurements were statistically analyzed: the maximum pulse rate reduction obtained during the test period of 6 min and the baseline pulse rate at the start of the session. Results suggest that yoga practice may have an augmenting effect in pulse rate biofeedback treatments if practiced simultaneously. While this study found an improvement in the ability of Ss to reduce their pulse rate in response to external cues following yoga training, it would be useful to investigate if yoga practice can help reduce the heart rate at will, in the absence of external cues. These results have implications for the use of yoga therapy in the management of stress-related ailments. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2002 APA, all rights reserved)
