| Abstract: | This study explored the experience of teaching holistic physical activity programs for personal and social development. These programs represent the unique intersection of a well-established model for teaching physical activity and traditional Asian methods of self-cultivation. The teaching model was developed by Professor Don Hellison and is referred to as the Personal and Social Responsibility Model (PSRM). The Holistic Physical Activity (HPA) introduced in these programs was drawn from martial arts, Tai Chi, Yoga, and meditation. In order to trace the development of these programs and describe the experience, I employed autobiographical and narrative forms of inquiry. Analysis of my personal history resulted in the identification of several themes that shaped my teaching. In analyzing my fieldwork, I traced my professional development and used Schwab's framework of practical inquiry to describe the process of curriculum development. In addition to the personal significance of this study, several insights were gained that may be of theoretical and practical relevance to others. These insights relate to novel applications of the PSRM, HPA, and curriculum development. |
