| Abstract: | Analyzed responses to an anonymous questionnaire completed by 129 former inpatients with multiple sclerosis (MS) diagnosed by typical clinical and laboratory findings. 82 Ss had been treated with a total of 87 different alternative healing methods or substances. Some Ss used up to 9 different methods. The mean duration of the alternative treatment was 2.6 yrs. 35 Ss used homeopathy, 29 used herbs, 38 used relaxation methods like yoga, and 21 used various diets. The most important motivation to look for alternative medicine was the aim to participate actively in the healing process. Most Ss thought that there was some positive effect from the alternative treatment but did not inform their general practitioner or neurologist about it. The experience with alternative treatments forms part of the patient's coping with the MS.
