| Abstract: | A composition of stress management tools which emparts awareness on the dynamics of stress and teaches positive coping skills. It also includes a research project called 'The Meaning and Impact of Wellness Programs on our Organization and the Work Force' which overviews the status of wellness programs in the United States. The tools designed to aid in stress reduction include a stress management manual, an audio relaxation tape, and an exercise video composed of movements one can do at the desk to relieve tension. The stress management manual called 'Less Stress Through Awareness' utilizes Buddhist Psychology, mind-body awareness, cognitive therapy techniques, hypnosis, and self hypnosis to work with the many levels of the stress reaction. It also deals with the process of change and resistance. The audio component consists of a description of deep diaphramatic breathing, and a twenty minute progressive relaxation exercise which utilizes positive affirmations to affect a change. The manual guides the reader in formulating the positive affirmations that are incorporated into the self hypnotic portion of the tape. The video component demonstrates exercises one can do at the desk based on Yoga, Feldenkrais and Laban movements. These movements, in combination with the breath, are designed to release tension which accumulates while sitting for long periods of time at work. The video is designed to be sent to work sites with VCRs to help employees deal with body tension under stress. The research project gives an overview of the rational behind wellness programs at the work site and investigates their rate of success and reasons for their failure. The manual with its audio and video components brings an awareness and an expansion of alternatives to the area of stress management. It demonstrates how one can stop perpetuating the stress cycle, take responsibility, and work with oneself in a more compassionate way. |
