Abstract: (from the chapter) do major qualitative advances in cognitive development occur after adolescence / most contemporary psychologists would say they do not / in contrast, throughout the history of both Eastern and Western thought, one finds accounts describing the possibility of profound developmental transformations in adulthood / the most ancient and extensive of these descriptions is found in the Vedic tradition of India (chapter); we propose that this ancient system, as recently formulated in the Vedic psychology of Maharishi Mahesh Yogi . . . describes (1) a universally available sequence of "higher stages of consciousness" that dramatically extends beyond the ordinarily understood endpoint of human development and (2) the systematic means for their facilitation (chapter); examine the higher stages as described in Maharishi's Vedic psychology . . . and demonstrate how they meet criteria for major qualitative advancement / discuss Vedic psychology's theory of "levels of mind" as an integrated hierarchy of discrete levels of cognitive functioning / propose a life-span model explaining how these levels of mind account for the unfoldment of the ordinary phases of development and, ultimately, for growth to higher stages of consciousness / propose a general mechanism for human development based on this model / review findings from experiments we have conducted to test developmental predictions arising from Vedic psychology (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2012 APA, all rights reserved) (chapter)
