| Abstract: | A 46-yr-old male US Air Force aviator with a 6-yr history of mild essential hypertension under unsuccessful treatment with hydrochlorothiazide, dietary modification, and exercise, was subsequently trained in yoga relaxation. After 6 wks, medication had been discontinued, and the S's diastolic blood pressure remained within normal levels. The S was subsequently returned to full flight status without recurrence of diastolic hypertension at follow-up 5 mo later. Relaxation training should be considered as a nonpharmacological therapy adjunct or alternative for medical disorders among personnel in occupations where the side effects from medications are of great concern and could result in disqualification from duty.
