Titel: A behavioral analysis of diaphragmatic breathing and its effects on peripheral temperature

Abstract: Three young women volunteers (aged 24-32 yrs) were trained through instructional feedback in 2 breathing procedures: diaphragmatic, derived from Eastern meditative techniques, and thoracic, involving opposite maneuvers. Ss were screened by interview to exclude chronic smokers and those currently practicing breathing techniques (e.g., singing lessons, yoga). In Phase 1 of the experiment, Ss breathed normally; in Phase 2, they received training in diaphragmatic and thoracic breathing; and in Phase 3, within-session reversals were implemented. Ss' scores were subjected to a 1-way analysis of variance across the 3 breathing conditions. Results show that temperatures decreased throughout Phase 1, probably due to warm outdoor and cool indoor temperatures. For 2 Ss, temperature during diaphragmatic breathing was generally stable; temperature during thoracic breathing showed significant decreases and did not differ from normal breathing. During Phase 3, dramatic changes in temperature as a function of breathing technique, which were maintained at follow-up, occurred for 2 Ss. Temperature was more labile and decreased regardless of breathing procedure for the 3rd S. Data support a relationship between respiratory and vasomotor activity, and suggest that breathing strategy may be an uncontrolled variable in temperature biofeedback. It is further suggested that diaphragmatic breathing may facilitate temperature biofeedback or other types of relaxation training.
